Kiva.org - Lending to change lives
By Paul F. • Dec 3rd, 2007 • Category: FinancesIt seems that there is nothing more to report on the news besides tragedy. Wars here, conflicts there, people dying… And after all finished, media have the amazing bad habit of simply dropping the stories (ok, I understand to a certain extent). But, after every war, conflict or natural disasters, the rebuilding process starts. And innocent people who have seen their lives radically destroyed could sometimes use a little push.
People who want to restart their businesses, re-shape their lives, in the affected areas, might have nothing to use as collateral for bank loans.
Kiva.org is an organization that tries to change this. Through them you can choose someone in the developing world and, for as little as $25, help change a life.
It’s not a donation. You are lending this money and you usually will get it back from the entrepreneur. Everything is handled through local micro-credit agencies and you’ll get regular reports on how your money is being used.
If you’re thinking: ok, but what’s in it for me? you probably will be disappointed. You won’t get any interest out of the "investment" besides the personal reward it is to know that you’re helping someone who needs it.
This video tells a little bit more about it.
